The most dangerous mistake Randy may have made was not what he gave Hayley. It was what he said when Joey suddenly appeared. Randy immediately changed his behavior, invented an explanation, and walked away. He may have thought he was covering his tracks, but that sudden excuse could be exactly what puts Joey on his trail.
Randy’s biggest problem is that his explanation comes at the worst possible moment. He claims he has business involving a VIP player or someone who owes money, giving Joey a convenient reason for why he was there. Joey may start asking questions that Randy never expected anyone to ask. Why was Randy involved with Hayley? What exactly was being transferred between them? And why did everything suddenly become connected to Bill?
The most explosive possibility is that Joey eventually discovers Randy did not merely help Hayley keep a secret. He supplied the poison Hayley used on Bill. But that should be the final revelation, not the starting point. The real suspense comes from watching Joey peel back each layer one at a time: Randy lied, Randy knows Hayley, Randy gave Hayley something, and then Bill collapsed.
Randy may believe his quick excuse saved him when Joey appeared. It could actually be the moment that destroys his cover. Joey does not have to catch Randy holding the poison. He only has to catch him lying. Once Joey decides that Randy’s story does not add up, the investigation can lead him straight back to Hayley—and eventually to the one secret Randy cannot afford for Joey to uncover.
