Billy and Cane would need strategy, negotiation skills and the ability to make difficult decisions under pressure.

The rules would make the competition even harder. Neither man could use outside family money or powerful allies to manufacture a victory. Billy could not run to Jack and ask the Abbotts to rescue his proposal. Cane could not rely on another corporate powerhouse to hand him an easy solution. Each man would have to build his own proposal and convince the client that his vision represents Chancellor’s strongest future.
That distinction is crucial because Lily is not really trying to discover who wants Chancellor more. She already knows Billy desperately wants it. Her question is whether Billy understands what running Chancellor actually means. Taking control of Katherine’s company is one thing. Protecting its employees, making profitable decisions and keeping important clients when everything is falling apart is something entirely different.
Lily could make the assignment even more difficult by ensuring there is no perfect solution. Perhaps keeping the $500 million contract requires major restructuring. One option protects Chancellor’s profits but puts hundreds of jobs at risk. Another protects employees but requires the company to accept significantly smaller margins. Billy and Cane would therefore be forced to reveal exactly what kind of leaders they are.
Cane could take the colder approach. He might focus entirely on numbers, eliminate unnecessary costs and present Lily with the proposal that produces the largest immediate profit. Billy, meanwhile, could surprise everyone by searching for a solution that protects both Chancellor’s financial future and the people who depend on the company.
That would be the real trap hidden inside Lily’s challenge.
Billy has spent so much time fighting to possess Chancellor that Lily needs to discover whether he can finally put Chancellor ahead of Billy Abbott. And the final result does not necessarily have to be decided by who brings back the biggest number.
Cane could technically secure the more profitable proposal, while Billy presents the more sustainable plan. That would leave Lily with the hardest decision of all: choose the man who delivers the fastest financial victory or the man whose strategy gives Chancellor the safest future.
The most satisfying outcome would be Billy winning Lily’s test — but only barely.
For once, Billy could resist the temptation to make everything about revenge, ego or proving another man wrong. He could walk into Lily’s office with a proposal strong enough to force her to admit something she never expected to say: Billy Abbott really can lead Chancellor.
That victory would immediately raise the stakes of the entire ownership battle. Lily promised Billy that if he convinced her he was the right person to run Chancellor, she could step aside without a fight. If Billy defeats Cane under Lily’s own rules, she would have very little room left to retreat.
