Detective Joe Fitzpatrick may not be the outsider General Hospital wants viewers to believe he is. Although Joe arrived in Port Charles as a completely new character, his name could be hiding a surprising connection to one of the show’s oldest families. Could the detective who has been getting closer to Lucas Jones secretly be a descendant of Joe Kelly?
For now, this is only a fan theory—not a confirmed spoiler. ABC has not revealed a biological connection between Joe Fitzpatrick and the Kelly family. Nevertheless, the possibility deserves attention because GH rarely introduces an important character without eventually explaining where that person came from.
The speculation surfaced in a June 30 Reddit episode discussion, where a viewer wondered whether Joe Fitzpatrick might be related to Joe Kelly. It was an isolated comment rather than a widespread theory, but Joe’s unexplained background has kept the question alive. The show has told viewers almost nothing about his parents, childhood or reason for choosing Port Charles.
Joe Kelly is a legacy GH character who appeared from 1978 to 1983. He was a private investigator before becoming a lawyer and was connected to the family behind Kelly’s Diner. His father, Paddy Kelly, was killed by the mob, while his stepmother, Rose Kelly, became the diner’s memorable owner.
That history makes the name “Joe” difficult to dismiss entirely. General Hospital could have chosen almost any name for Jonathan Bennett’s new detective. Instead, the writers introduced another Irish-American lawman named Joe while leaving his family history conspicuously blank.
The surname Fitzpatrick also strengthens the thematic connection. Both Kelly and Fitzpatrick are Irish surnames, but that alone proves nothing. If GH wanted to connect the two families, Joe’s mother could have been a Kelly while his father carried the Fitzpatrick name. That would allow the show to preserve his established identity while revealing his connection to Port Charles history.
Such a twist would also explain why Joe seems unusually important for a character introduced as a new PCPD detective. Joe has participated in major investigations, helped capture Sidwell and personally looked after Lucas after Sidwell shot him. He is now living with Lucas because of an apartment mix-up that resembles the beginning of a classic roommates-to-lovers story.
A Kelly family revelation could therefore affect more than Joe’s biography. Lucas was raised by Bobbie Spencer and Tony Jones, making Kelly’s and the people surrounding it part of his extended family history. Discovering that his new roommate belongs to the family associated with the diner could deepen their developing relationship without making them biological relatives.
The revelation would also give Joe a meaningful connection to the mob stories he currently investigates. Paddy Kelly’s death was tied to organized crime. If Joe grew up hearing that a Port Charles criminal organization destroyed part of his family, his determination to remain an impartial, by-the-book police officer would suddenly carry personal weight.
It could even create a conflict between Joe and Lucas. Lucas is the biological son of former mob boss Julian Jerome and the nephew of Ava Jerome. Joe might be attracted to Lucas while struggling with the fact that Lucas belongs by blood to a family historically connected to organized crime.
However, the theory currently has serious weaknesses. ABC officially introduced Joe Fitzpatrick as a new character, not the returning son or grandson of a legacy figure. No one has mentioned Rose, Paddy, Joe Kelly or the original Kelly family in Joe’s presence. No veteran character has recognized his name or reacted as if the Fitzpatricks once lived in Port Charles.
There is also no established child of Joe Kelly who conveniently fits Joe Fitzpatrick’s family tree. GH would have to create an offscreen child, hidden relationship or maternal connection. That is certainly possible on a soap, but it would be a retroactive addition rather than the resolution of an existing mystery.
The strongest argument for the theory is therefore not a DNA clue. It is the deliberate absence of information. Joe called himself an open book, yet the show has barely opened the cover. Viewers know what he does, but they do not know who raised him, where he came from or why he chose this particular police department.
General Hospital has repeatedly transformed apparent newcomers into secret relatives of established families. Joe Fitzpatrick could remain the rare Port Charles resident without a complicated family tree. But if the writers are preparing a legacy reveal, connecting him to Joe Kelly would be far more organic than making him another surprise Corinthos, Cassadine or Quartermaine.
Until Joe discusses his parents or his connection to Port Charles, the Kelly theory remains highly speculative. Still, his name, profession and missing history have created an opening GH could exploit. The biggest surprise may not be that Lucas falls for his new roommate—it may be that Joe Fitzpatrick was never truly new to Port Charles at all.
