Phyllis Summers thinks she has found the perfect way to turn Matt Clark into a hero, but she may be making one catastrophic mistake: choosing Sharon Newman as the target. The plan is supposed to create a controlled crisis that allows Matt to swoop in, save Sharon, and prove that he has changed. But what happens if Sharon realizes she is being set up before the “rescue” ever happens? Instead of becoming Phyllis’ victim, Sharon could quietly flip the entire scheme against her.
The foundation for disaster is already there. Phyllis wants Matt to repair his reputation, and manufacturing a heroic moment appears to be her shortcut. Sharon would be placed in what looks like danger, Matt would intervene, and everyone would supposedly see him differently afterward. Matt has already shown discomfort with involving Sharon, especially considering their painful history. That hesitation could become the first crack in Phyllis’ supposedly foolproof plan.
The biggest clue could arrive when Phyllis suddenly starts acting unusually friendly toward Sharon. Spoilers indicate that Phyllis will “play nice” with Sharon, and the timing is impossible to ignore. After discussing a scheme that depends on Sharon being unaware, Phyllis suddenly getting close to her could immediately raise suspicions. Sharon knows Phyllis too well to automatically believe an abrupt change in behavior is innocent.
That is where the story could take a far more satisfying turn than another Sharon-in-danger storyline. Sharon does not need to walk blindly into the trap. She could notice Phyllis asking strange questions, trying to control where she will be, or becoming unusually interested in her plans. Matt’s nervous behavior could provide another clue. One small inconsistency may be enough for Sharon to realize that something is being arranged behind her back.
But discovering the setup would only be the beginning. Sharon’s smartest move would be to keep Phyllis convinced that everything is proceeding exactly as planned. She could pretend she suspects nothing while quietly determining how much Matt and Phyllis have actually arranged. That would put Sharon in control for once and turn Phyllis’ confidence into her greatest weakness.
Then Sharon could deliver the bluff that destroys everything.
Imagine Sharon confronting Phyllis calmly and saying just four devastating words: “Matt told me everything.”
She would not even need to know everything. She would only need Phyllis to believe she does.
Phyllis could immediately assume Matt betrayed her and begin defending herself. She might insist that Sharon was never supposed to be seriously hurt. She could explain that the danger was staged, that Matt was only supposed to rescue her, and that the entire stunt was designed to change how Genoa City sees him. Every sentence intended to justify the scheme would actually give Sharon another piece of the confession.
By the time Phyllis realizes Sharon was bluffing, it would be too late.
The twist becomes even stronger if Matt witnesses the confrontation. Phyllis created this entire plan to prove that Matt deserves redemption, but suddenly Matt would face a genuine test of character. Does he lie to Sharon and protect Phyllis, or does he finally admit his role in the scheme? For the first time, Matt would have an opportunity to demonstrate change without a fake emergency or manufactured heroics.
That creates a delicious irony. Phyllis believes Matt needs to pretend to save Sharon to prove he is a better man. In reality, Matt could prove it by helping Sharon stop Phyllis from putting her in danger at all. Refusing to participate—or warning Sharon before the stunt begins—would accomplish what Phyllis’ elaborate scheme never could.
It would also give Sharon something many viewers desperately want for her: agency. Sharon has survived enough manipulation, trauma, and dangerous situations. Using her once again as collateral damage in somebody else’s redemption story risks repeating a familiar pattern. Letting Sharon identify the trap and weaponize Phyllis’ own deception against her would completely change that dynamic.
And Phyllis would finally face a consequence she could not talk her way around. This would not be about Sharon hearing a rumor or Matt changing his mind at the last second. Phyllis would expose herself because she underestimated Sharon. Her own words would reveal that she was willing to manipulate Sharon’s fear and safety simply to manufacture a heroic moment for Matt.
The upcoming interaction between Phyllis and Sharon could therefore be far more important than it initially appears. If Sharon notices even one suspicious detail, Phyllis’ rescue mission could collapse before it begins. And if Sharon decides to bluff her longtime rival into revealing the truth, the woman Phyllis intended to manipulate could become the person who exposes everything.
Phyllis wants to write Matt’s redemption story. She just may not realize Sharon is about to rewrite the ending.
