Leslie Thomas may have just found the perfect weapon to force the Articulettes to confront the one chapter of their history they would rather leave buried. What looks like a fight over producer credit and Barbara’s recordings could become something much more explosive. Leslie now has a reason to be inside the studio, listening to every conversation and challenging every decision involving her mother’s legacy. If she uses that access to start asking questions, the Articulettes album could quickly turn into an investigation into what really happened to Barbara.
The September 8 episode made Leslie’s anger impossible to ignore. Even while discussing the new music project, Leslie remained focused on what she believes Anita and the Articulettes did to Barbara. Vernon tried to push back against Leslie’s version of history, arguing that Barbara’s tragedy could not simply be blamed on Anita and her former group. Leslie was not interested in letting them off the hook. To her, Barbara’s career, pain and eventual fate are still connected to the women who continued without her.
That makes Leslie’s demand for a producer credit far more important than it initially appears. Anita may believe she is simply making a painful compromise so Barbara’s voice can be included in the project. Leslie, however, has now positioned herself where the decisions are being made. She can hear how Barbara’s recordings are handled, how the group talks about Barbara and, most importantly, what they say when old memories begin resurfacing.
The biggest unanswered question remains why Barbara was really pushed out of the Articulettes. The story that has been established points heavily toward manager Dante Green, who reportedly believed Barbara did not fit the polished commercial image he wanted for the group. Barbara turned to Anita for support, but Anita ultimately sided with Dante. Barbara lost her place while Anita remained and eventually became the breakout star. Leslie has never been able to look at that history without seeing betrayal.
But what if Leslie discovers that the story she has been told is incomplete? That possibility could transform the entire album storyline. Old master recordings, contracts, session notes, photographs or unreleased material could contain something nobody expected Leslie to see. Even a casual conversation between Anita, Sharon and Tracy could expose a contradiction. Leslie would only need one detail that does not match the official version of Barbara’s departure to begin digging.
Sharon and Tracy could also find themselves under Leslie’s microscope. Both women shared the Articulettes history with Barbara, yet the group continued after Barbara was gone. Leslie could demand to know why neither woman stopped Dante, why they stayed with the group and whether either of them remained in contact with Barbara afterward. Suddenly Anita would no longer be the only person forced to defend what happened. Every surviving Articulette could have something to explain.
Then there is Dante Green. His shadow hangs over nearly every important piece of Barbara’s story. He managed the group. He played a role in Barbara being pushed aside. He favored Anita’s potential and helped shape what came afterward. That creates a tantalizing possibility: perhaps Barbara’s supposed failure to fit the Articulettes image was only part of the reason Dante wanted her gone.
Some fans have already pushed the speculation further, wondering whether Dante and Barbara shared a secret relationship or whether Dante could even have a deeper connection to Leslie herself. Nothing has confirmed that theory, but Leslie’s new studio access creates an ideal mechanism for the writers to finally reopen the question. One forgotten recording, letter or private conversation could suddenly make Dante relevant again.
There is another possibility that would make the situation even more personal. Leslie may eventually decide that nobody else deserves to represent Barbara’s voice. Fans have already speculated that Leslie could wind up singing Barbara’s part herself. If that happens after Leslie uncovers evidence that Barbara was mistreated, it would no longer feel like Leslie merely forcing herself onto an album. She could see it as taking back the place she believes was stolen from her mother.
That is why the producer battle may be a massive misdirection. Leslie may appear obsessed with control, recognition and getting her name attached to the Articulettes project, but access could be the real prize. Anita has effectively allowed Barbara’s furious daughter into the room where decades of memories, recordings and grudges are about to collide.
And once Leslie starts asking questions, there may be no way to stop her.
The Articulettes believe they are making an album honoring their past. Leslie could turn it into a trial of that past instead. Barbara’s removal, Anita’s decision, Sharon and Tracy’s silence and Dante Green’s influence could all be dragged back into the light.
The most dangerous question is no longer whether Leslie will ruin the recording sessions.
It is what Leslie will discover once the Articulettes finally start talking about Barbara.
