Anita Dupree may believe she finally found the perfect way to control Leslie Thomas, but she could have just made the most dangerous mistake of the entire Articulettes comeback. What looked like a victory for Anita may actually have handed Leslie exactly what she wanted: access, credit, and leverage over the one element this project cannot easily replace — Barbara’s voice. Anita’s condition was supposed to silence Leslie. Instead, it may have put Leslie directly inside the project she now has the power to complicate.
The problem began when the Articulettes learned that using Barbara’s archived vocals was not as simple as pulling an old recording from the vault. Leslie’s approval was needed before Barbara’s voice could become part of the new project. That immediately changed the balance of power. Leslie was no longer an outsider Anita could simply ignore. She became the person standing between the Articulettes and one of the most emotionally important pieces of their comeback.
Leslie understood that leverage immediately. She did not simply give Anita what she wanted. Leslie demanded compensation, access to the recording sessions, and most controversially, a producer credit. That final demand pushed Anita too far. For Anita, allowing Leslie to attach herself creatively to an Articulettes project was almost unthinkable. But Leslie knew Anita wanted Barbara’s voice badly enough that refusing her completely would come with a price.
Then Anita blinked.
After resisting Leslie’s demand, Anita ultimately agreed to the deal, but she added a condition designed to protect the recording process: Leslie would have to remain quiet during the sessions. On the surface, it sounded brilliant. Leslie could have her credit and be present, but Anita would prevent her from hijacking the room. But that is exactly where Anita may have miscalculated.
Silencing Leslie inside a recording session does not necessarily erase the leverage that brought Leslie into the room in the first place. Barbara’s voice remains the crucial bargaining chip. If Leslie’s permission is necessary for those archived vocals to be used, the biggest question now is what exactly that permission covers. Could Leslie challenge how Barbara is presented? Could a dispute over the agreement threaten the use of the recordings? Could Anita discover that getting Leslie to say yes was only the beginning?
That possibility turns the Barbara tribute into something much more dangerous than an album.
Anita wants this project to restore Barbara’s place in Articulettes history. Barbara was not some insignificant footnote. She shared deep history with Sharon and Tracy and was once central to the group before being pushed out before its greatest success. That history already carries enormous emotional baggage. Bringing Barbara’s voice back means reopening everything connected to the moment she disappeared from the Articulettes story.
And Leslie will now be sitting close enough to hear it.
That may be Anita’s real mistake. Leslie does not even have to violate the agreement to cause trouble. She can sit quietly, listen and watch. Old masters, alternate recordings, conversations about Barbara and memories from the Articulettes’ earliest days could expose details Leslie never knew. Every recording session creates another opportunity for Leslie to ask the question Anita may least want reopened: What really happened to Barbara?
Imagine Leslie discovering that the official explanation about Barbara’s departure is incomplete. What if Barbara was promised something she never received? What if someone inside the Articulettes knew more about her removal than Leslie was ever told? Even worse, what if an old recording contradicts the story Leslie has been given about her mother?
Suddenly, Leslie’s producer credit would not look like vanity. It would look like access.
That is why Anita’s “stay quiet” condition could backfire spectacularly. Anita is focused on preventing Leslie from disrupting the sessions verbally, while Leslie may be gaining something far more valuable simply by being there. She could hear the stories, see the materials and discover exactly how much Barbara contributed before the world learned to celebrate the Articulettes without her.
There is also another dangerous possibility. If Anita and Leslie clash over how Barbara’s vocals are used, the dispute could threaten the entire project. The show has not established the exact legal terms of Leslie’s approval, so it is too early to say Leslie could simply shut down the album. But the fact that the Articulettes needed her permission at all makes that question impossible to ignore.
And Leslie loves leverage.
Anita may think she invited Leslie into the studio under strict rules. Leslie may see something completely different: an invitation into the Articulettes’ past.
If Barbara’s voice exposes even one secret about why she lost her place in the group, this comeback could stop being a celebration and become a reckoning. Anita wanted to give Barbara her voice back. She may have accidentally given Leslie the weapon she needs to tear open everything the Articulettes left buried.
The album has not even been finished yet.
And Leslie may already hold the most dangerous track.
