Beyond the Gates has suddenly made Smitty’s missing visit with Lia the most important gap in the entire investigation. For weeks, viewers have been told pieces of what happened between them, but one crucial part of the story has remained out of sight: what actually happened when Smitty went back to see Lia?
Now the investigation surrounding Lia’s death has created the perfect reason for that missing encounter to come back into focus. And if BTG finally reconstructs or reveals what happened inside that room, the most dangerous moment may not be what Smitty said to Lia. It may be what Lia did while Smitty was there.
That distinction matters because Jacob’s investigation has already uncovered something Smitty cannot easily explain away. Surveillance footage connects Smitty to Max shortly before his contact with Lia, with Max appearing to hand him a purple pouch. A similar-looking item later became significant in the investigation surrounding Lia’s death.
Suddenly, a meeting viewers never fully witnessed matters more than ever.
Imagine the missing footage beginning without anything obviously explosive. Smitty arrives believing he is there to get information. Lia is guarded. She knows he has questions about the Red Market operation, but she has already insisted that she cannot identify the Impaler.
Then something changes.
Lia notices what Smitty has with him.
Smitty may not even understand why her reaction matters. To him, the object could have seemed unimportant when Max handed it over. To Lia, however, it could mean something completely different.
That is where the missing scene becomes dangerous.
The biggest unresolved question surrounding Lia has never simply been whether she knew the Impaler’s identity. In fact, Lia previously maintained that she did not know who the Impaler was. The far more interesting question is what she knew about the operation itself.
A courier. A procedure. A location. A payment system. A recognizable object.
Any one of those possibilities could explain why something seemingly meaningless to Smitty produced a very different reaction from Lia.
And Smitty may have missed it completely.
That would also explain why Jacob’s new evidence is so damaging. Investigators can see Max handing something to Smitty. They know Smitty later visited Lia. They have evidence connected to Lia’s cell. What they do not necessarily have is the context that explains how those events fit together.
Smitty has that context — but even he may not realize which moment matters.
There is another reason viewers should pay attention to this missing encounter: Heather.
Heather showed an unusual interest in Smitty’s investigation before his current trouble exploded. Joey became concerned enough to warn Heather to stay away from Smitty, yet Heather eventually circled back to him anyway.
That chronology makes Lia’s missing meeting even more important.
If Lia reacted to something Smitty unknowingly carried into that room, then someone who understood the Red Market operation could potentially understand the significance of that reaction far better than Smitty did.
That does not prove Heather planted evidence, manipulated the meeting, or caused Lia’s death. Those conclusions have not been established by the show.
But it creates a much more disturbing possibility.
Smitty may have walked into Lia’s room believing he was the investigator.
He may actually have been carrying the clue.
And Lia may have been the only person in the room who recognized it.
That is why the missing Smitty–Lia encounter has suddenly become so important. The answer to Lia’s death may not begin with the question everyone has been asking — “Who was the Impaler?”
It may begin with something much smaller.
What did Lia see when Smitty walked into that room?
And what happened immediately afterward?
Because if that missing part of the encounter finally comes into view, one tiny reaction from Lia could completely change what Jacob believes happened — and reveal why Smitty has suddenly found himself standing in the middle of an investigation he thought he was helping solve.
