Beyond the Gates may have just created a spectacular problem for Heather Armstrong. Her apparent attempt to bury Smitty with surveillance footage looks dangerous enough on its own, but the bigger bomb may be hiding somewhere else inside Uptown’s cameras. If Jacob starts digging through the club’s archived recordings to prove what happened to Smitty, he could stumble directly into Hayley and Randy’s secret meetings — and suddenly the investigation into Lia’s death could expose an entirely different crime.
The trap around Smitty tightened when Jacob brought him in for questioning and showed him footage involving Max. The recording appeared to connect Smitty to the mysterious purple pouch that has become central to the investigation surrounding Lia’s death. Naomi immediately stopped the questioning once Jacob admitted Smitty was not under arrest, but the damage was already done. Someone had put evidence in front of the police that made Smitty look dangerously connected to Lia’s final hours.
Smitty immediately knew something was wrong. The timeline did not fit what he remembered about Max, and after returning home with Naomi, he began considering the possibility that the Impaler was deliberately setting him up. That suspicion becomes even more important because the footage came from Uptown — a location now connected directly to Heather.
Heather’s control of Uptown gives her something far more powerful than access to a popular club. It gives her access to its surveillance history. The ConnectUs program has also placed business security footage within reach of law enforcement, meaning the same cameras that can seemingly incriminate Smitty can potentially preserve months of other conversations, meetings and movements.
That is where Heather’s plan could become a disaster.
Jacob cannot simply ignore Smitty’s claim that the footage is wrong. Max entered witness protection, while Smitty remembers their real meeting happening months earlier. If those facts contradict the timestamp investigators were given, Jacob has an obvious reason to determine whether the footage was altered. And the cleanest way to do that would be to go backward — comparing archived recordings, dates, camera angles and earlier Uptown footage.
The moment Jacob starts doing that, this stops being only Smitty’s problem.
Hayley and Randy have repeatedly used Uptown as a meeting place while their secret scheme against Bill unfolded. They have discussed the failure of their plan and the fact that Bill is still alive. Bill himself has already spotted the two together at Uptown, although he did not understand the full truth behind their connection. The cameras, however, do not need to understand anything. They only need to have been recording.
Imagine Jacob searching February footage for the original Smitty-Max meeting. He finds it and proves the recording currently being used against Smitty was manipulated. That discovery would immediately raise another question: what else is sitting inside Uptown’s archive?
Suddenly, detectives would have a reason to preserve and examine those recordings rather than treating them as ordinary bar surveillance.
That could put Hayley in an especially dangerous position because Naomi already distrusts her stepmother. If Naomi is fighting to clear Smitty and learns that the answer is buried inside Uptown’s old footage, she has every reason to push Jacob to investigate the archive thoroughly. Neither of them would need to be looking for Hayley. Hayley could simply appear in the wrong recording with the wrong person.
Randy would make that discovery even harder to dismiss.
Hayley meeting a man privately might mean nothing by itself. But repeated meetings with Randy, combined with Bill’s worsening physical condition and everything Naomi already suspects about Hayley, could turn an accidental discovery into an entirely new investigation. One recording might lead Jacob to another, and suddenly a search designed to save Smitty could become the first real threat to Hayley and Randy’s cover.
That would be the brutal irony of Heather’s move.
By allegedly manipulating surveillance evidence to make Smitty look guilty, Heather may force police to examine the one place several people desperately need them to ignore. The more convincing the fake footage looks, the more damaging its eventual exposure becomes, because investigators will want to know exactly how the surveillance system was compromised and what else might have been altered.
And once they open that archive, Heather no longer controls what Jacob finds.
Smitty may believe he is the target, but he might actually become the reason another secret explodes first. The purple pouch could lead Jacob into Uptown’s surveillance history, the original Max footage could prove someone manufactured the timeline, and buried among those recordings could be Hayley and Randy discussing the secret they never expected police to hear.
Heather wanted Uptown’s cameras to destroy Smitty.
Instead, she may have just pointed Jacob toward the evidence that destroys Hayley and Randy.
