IS SONNY LEAVING GH? HIS BRUTAL FRAME-UP PUTS MAURICE BENARD’S RETIREMENT CONFESSION BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT — AND HIS CONTRACT CLOCK IS TICKING!

Sonny Corinthos is being pushed into one of the most dangerous corners of his General Hospital life, but the bigger bombshell may be unfolding away from Port Charles. As Sonny fights a brutal frame-up and watches people closest to him question whether he is telling the truth, Maurice Benard’s previous comments about retirement suddenly carry much more weight. Add an approaching contract deadline, and one frightening question becomes impossible to ignore: Is GH quietly laying the groundwork for Sonny’s eventual exit?

The timing is what makes the current story so intriguing. Sonny has stepped away from the mob, yet his criminal reputation is now being used against him. The Pentonville attack has created exactly the kind of accusation people are willing to believe because of Sonny’s past. Instead of getting a clean new beginning, he is being forced to defend himself against a crime that looks painfully believable to people who already expect the worst from him.

That frame-up has also begun damaging Sonny’s most important relationships. Dante’s faith in his father has been shaken, while others around Sonny have questioned whether he truly left his ruthless methods behind. Fans are already furious over how quickly some Port Charles residents have condemned him, with many waiting for the moment the evidence finally clears Sonny and forces his doubters to face what they did.

But there is a real-life clock hanging over this fictional crisis. Maurice Benard revealed in August that his current GH contract is up around February or March 2027. That does not mean Benard is leaving when the deal expires, and there has been no confirmed announcement that Sonny is being written out. Still, with that deadline now only months away, every major change in Sonny’s story naturally attracts more attention.

Benard’s own retirement comments make the situation even more fascinating. In 2025, the longtime GH star made it clear that retirement would eventually happen, although he did not expect it before he reached 65. He also directly rejected rumors that he was already preparing to leave. More recently, Benard reiterated that he does not want to retire soon and would remain at GH as long as he continues to be happy there.

That reassurance should calm exit fears, but Benard has also admitted that playing Sonny indefinitely may not be realistic. After more than three decades in Port Charles, the role demands a tremendous commitment. That is why every reference to retirement becomes significant when GH simultaneously begins dismantling pieces of Sonny’s old life.

There is another detail that makes the speculation even harder to dismiss. Benard has previously imagined how Sonny’s final chapter could look if the day ever came for him to leave. His hypothetical ending was dark, emotional and centered on Sonny being devastated by something involving one of his children. It was not a spoiler or a prediction, but it showed that Benard has clearly thought about what an unforgettable Sonny exit might require.

That makes the current frame-up particularly interesting. Sonny is not simply facing another enemy. His past, his family and his reputation are colliding at once. If GH wanted to construct a major exit story for one of its most iconic characters, isolating Sonny before forcing him to confront the consequences of his entire life would certainly create enormous emotional stakes.

However, there is equally strong evidence pointing in the opposite direction. Benard has teased that he already knows what GH has planned for Sonny next and is extremely happy about it. He has suggested Sonny can remain powerful without returning to the mob, opening the door to an entirely new chapter rather than an ending.

Perhaps that is the real twist.

The frame-up may look like the beginning of Sonny Corinthos’ farewell, but it could instead be the storyline that destroys the old version of Sonny. Clearing his name after abandoning the mob would force Port Charles to recognize that the man they judged by his past is no longer necessarily the man standing in front of them.

For now, there is no confirmed Sonny exit and no announcement that Maurice Benard is leaving General Hospital. His current contract simply creates a very real deadline for future negotiations.

But with Sonny under attack, Benard’s retirement comments resurfacing and February/March 2027 drawing closer, GH has accidentally—or deliberately—created the perfect storm for speculation.

The biggest question may no longer be whether Sonny survives the frame-up.

It is what General Hospital intends to do with him once he does.
