JOEY NEVER HUNTED THE IMPALER — HE BUILT THE PERFECT TRAP AND LET HEATHER WALK STRAIGHT INTO IT

For months, the biggest mystery in Beyond the Gates has revolved around one question: who is The Impaler? But recent clues suggest viewers may have been asking the wrong question all along. The real mystery may not be the identity of The Impaler at all. It may be whether Joey Armstrong already knew the answer long before anyone else—and secretly turned the entire investigation into a carefully orchestrated trap. Looking back at Joey’s actions, a shocking pattern begins to emerge. He doesn’t look like a man chasing a criminal. He looks like a man controlling the hunt.

The first clue comes from Joey’s conversation with Vanessa in the June 9 episode. Joey claimed that The Impaler approached him with an offer to work together and that he rejected it. On the surface, the explanation sounds reasonable. However, the more closely the scene is examined, the stranger it becomes. Joey carefully controls the information he shares. He avoids revealing anything that could lead Vanessa toward the full truth. Instead of sounding shocked or conflicted, he sounds prepared. It feels less like a spontaneous conversation and more like a story that had already been rehearsed. If Joey truly discovered a horrifying secret, why does he sound like someone managing damage rather than reacting to it?

The second clue may be even more important. Joey intentionally gave Jacob the name Davit Azarian. At first, it appeared that he was helping the investigation. But what if that wasn’t his real goal? The name immediately pushed attention in a different direction and bought valuable time. If Heather was already on Joey’s radar, introducing a new suspect would be the perfect way to keep law enforcement occupied while protecting the person he actually wanted to watch. This is not the move of a desperate man. It is the move of a strategist. Every chess master sacrifices pieces to control the board, and Davit Azarian may have been nothing more than a sacrificial distraction.

Another detail that continues to stand out is Joey’s unusual ability to stay ahead of everyone around him. Throughout the storyline, he often appears to know more than he should. He anticipates developments before they happen. He rarely seems surprised by new information. While other characters are constantly reacting to events, Joey is almost always preparing for them. That difference is significant. People who are caught in a crisis react emotionally. People who understand the crisis in advance tend to remain calm. Joey’s confidence suggests that he may have been operating with knowledge no one else possessed.

Perhaps the most suspicious aspect of all is the complete absence of panic. If The Impaler truly represented an unpredictable threat to Joey’s future, his business, and his safety, there should have been moments where fear broke through the surface. Instead, Joey remains remarkably controlled. He doesn’t lash out. He doesn’t spiral. He doesn’t make reckless mistakes. In fact, the deeper the crisis becomes, the calmer Joey appears. That behavior makes far more sense if he already understands the endgame. He doesn’t look like prey trying to survive. He looks like a player waiting for the right moment to strike.

This leads to the most explosive possibility of all: Joey may have deliberately allowed Heather to continue operating because she was more useful free than captured. If Heather truly sits at the center of a larger network, exposing her immediately would only cut off access to the bigger targets. By allowing her to continue moving, Joey could quietly identify every connection surrounding her. Every meeting, every transaction, every secret partner would become another piece of intelligence. Under this theory, Joey was never protecting Heather out of loyalty. He was using her as bait.

Once that possibility is considered, Joey’s entire storyline begins to look different. The Impaler may never have been his ultimate target. Heather may simply be the key that unlocks something much larger. Joey’s real objective could be exposing an entire criminal operation, eliminating rivals, securing leverage, or consolidating power. In that scenario, Heather becomes a pawn on the board while Joey becomes the person moving the pieces. Every lie, every delay, and every misleading clue suddenly serves a purpose.

The most fascinating part of this theory is that it explains nearly every suspicious decision Joey has made in recent weeks. His conversation with Vanessa, the Davit Azarian distraction, his unusual confidence, and his constant control over information all point toward the same conclusion. Viewed separately, these moments seem odd. Viewed together, they resemble the stages of a single long-term strategy.

If this theory proves correct, the biggest twist in the entire Impaler storyline will not be Heather’s identity. That reveal may only be the beginning. The true bombshell could be discovering that Joey knew exactly who The Impaler was long before anyone else—and quietly transformed the entire investigation into a trap designed by his own hand. In the end, Heather may not be the mastermind everyone feared. Joey may have been the mastermind all along.
