After refusing to leave town and declaring that he will not stop until The Impaler is unmasked, Smitty’s decision to appear on a true-crime podcast could push Heather’s dark secrets far beyond the private investigation. The bigger danger for Joey, however, may not be Heather’s exposure itself. It may be what Smitty discovers about the people who knew the truth long before the public did.
The timing is especially suspicious. Smitty has made it clear that he is no longer willing to walk away from the Impaler investigation. His statement, “I can’t stop until the Impaler is unmasked,” sounds like a direct promise that the investigation is about to escalate. But there is an important question hiding underneath that declaration: what exactly is Smitty still trying to uncover if Heather has already been confirmed as The Impaler?
That question could completely change the direction of the story. Heather’s identity is no longer the biggest mystery. The real mystery is her network, her motives, and how many people may have known what she was doing. If Smitty is continuing to investigate after Heather’s identity has effectively been established, then there may be another layer to the story that has not yet been exposed. The podcast could give him the perfect opportunity to reveal it.
And that is where Joey becomes extremely important.
In the same episode, Vanessa directly questioned Joey about whether Heather could be connected to anything “dangerous or illegal.” Instead of giving her a clear explanation, Joey immediately refused to answer. That reaction may be more revealing than any confession. If Joey truly had nothing to hide, why would such a simple question make him shut down?
Joey’s silence creates a dangerous contradiction. On one side, Smitty is determined to expose the truth. On the other, Joey appears determined to keep that truth away from Vanessa. The two storylines are moving toward the same collision point from completely opposite directions. Smitty wants information in the open. Joey wants information buried.
The true-crime podcast could be the turning point because it takes Smitty’s investigation out of a private setting and places it in front of a much larger audience. Once Smitty starts discussing the Impaler case publicly, individual clues that seemed insignificant before could suddenly become connected. Vanessa is the person who could suffer the biggest emotional shock.

There is also a possibility that Martin and Jacob could become important pieces of the investigation as Smitty digs deeper. If the podcast causes previously disconnected events to be examined again, people who seemed unrelated to Heather’s story could suddenly become relevant. One overlooked conversation, one unexplained connection, or one missing piece of information could change the entire interpretation of what happened.
The most explosive possibility is that Smitty is not really hunting for Heather anymore. He may be hunting for the truth surrounding Heather — and that truth could lead directly to Joey.
That is why the podcast storyline could become far more dangerous than a simple public exposure of The Impaler. Heather’s identity may already be known, but the full story behind her remains unfinished. If Smitty keeps pulling the thread, he could expose a network of secrets that reaches directly into Joey and Vanessa’s relationship.
