Sonny Corinthos’ vicious confrontation with Ava Jerome on August 27 may have opened the door to an enormous paternity twist—one capable of changing the Corinthos family forever. Sonny called Ava a “cancer” that needed to be cut out of Avery’s life, an extreme declaration that appeared far bigger than their argument over their daughter’s clothes. Could Sonny have discovered that Avery is not biologically his daughter after all?
For now, General Hospital has not confirmed a new DNA result. The established story still identifies Sonny as Avery’s biological father. However, the unusual history of Avery’s original paternity test explains why the possibility that Morgan Corinthos fathered her has never completely disappeared from viewer discussion.
When Ava became pregnant in 2014, she had slept with Sonny and his son Morgan on the same day. Both men were therefore considered possible fathers. The eventual DNA test determined that Sonny was Avery’s father, and ABC’s own historical recap reported that result. Morgan was devastated, while Sonny assumed his place in the baby’s life.
That result should have ended the mystery, but the testing method immediately created questions. Because Sonny and Morgan were father and son, their DNA naturally shared important similarities. The comparison reportedly used Carly’s genetic material to help distinguish between them, leading some viewers to wonder whether the process left room for error—or deliberate interference.
No aired evidence currently proves that the test was wrong or manipulated. Nevertheless, fans have repeatedly proposed that General Hospital could revisit the result. In a recent discussion about Avery’s absence, one viewer suggested the show might be preserving the character for a future Morgan paternity story. Another August 27 discussion directly mentioned the possibility of rewriting Avery’s history and making Morgan her biological father.
The renewed speculation is especially interesting because Sonny’s attitude toward Ava changed so dramatically. Only weeks earlier, Ava told Drew Cain that she and Sonny had maintained peace for Avery’s sake. On August 27, Sonny suddenly declared that Ava needed to be removed from Avery’s life. The emotional distance between those positions is enormous.
A secret DNA discovery would explain that shift—but only as a theory. If Sonny learned that Morgan fathered Avery, his entire relationship with the child would be emotionally redefined. Avery would still be part of the Corinthos family, but Sonny would be her grandfather rather than her biological father. Ava would also become the woman who gave birth to his late son’s daughter while allowing Sonny to raise her under a false assumption.
The revelation could reopen Sonny’s grief over Morgan’s death. Ava’s role in tampering with Morgan’s medication already hangs over their history. Although she did not plant the bomb that killed him, her actions contributed to the emotional and medical instability surrounding his final months. It could also explain why Sonny used such severe language. Calling Ava a “cancer” in Avery’s life sounds less like an ordinary custody argument and more like the reaction of someone who believes Ava has poisoned his family for years. If he discovered that she concealed the truth about Morgan, his August 27 outburst would carry an entirely different meaning.
The strongest counterargument is substantial: there is no proof Ava knows the original result was wrong. The 2014 storyline showed everyone accepting Sonny’s paternity, and ABC’s archived recap explicitly states that the DNA test identified Sonny as the father. A retcon would require the show to explain who altered the test, how it remained hidden and why the truth is emerging now.
Carly would immediately become a figure of suspicion because her DNA was involved in resolving the original question. Longstanding fan speculation has suggested she might have changed the result to keep Morgan away from Ava. However, that allegation has never been established on-screen and must not be treated as confirmed history.
The twist would create enormous consequences. Morgan would gain a surviving biological child. Sonny would have to decide whether a genetic result changes his bond with the girl he has raised as his daughter. Carly would face questions about the original test, while Ava could either lose everything or gain a powerful defense against Sonny’s custody threats.
Most importantly, Avery would finally become central to her own story. Fans have repeatedly complained that characters fight over her while she remains largely off-screen. A paternity revelation would require the show to explore her identity, her connection to Morgan and the emotional damage caused by another secret kept by Port Charles’ adults.
Sonny has not confirmed that Avery belongs to Morgan. But his startling August 27 attack has made the old DNA question newly relevant. If General Hospital is preparing to overturn the 2014 result, Sonny and Ava’s broken truce may be only the first shock in a much larger Corinthos family catastrophe.
