Jack Brennan’s death was already difficult for many General Hospital viewers to accept, but Chris McKenna’s exit interview has made the loss even more frustrating. Brennan was found dead in the Metro Court pool after Ava drugged him on Drew’s orders. Instead of receiving a heroic sacrifice, a final confrontation, or even a meaningful goodbye, the WSB chief ended his run as a body hidden in a laundry cart.
McKenna did not pretend this was the ending he wanted. Speaking to TV Insider, the actor admitted that the conclusion was “disappointing,” although he remained grateful for his time on the ABC soap. He explained that he finished filming in June and had several months to process the decision. His comments did not attack the producers, but they revealed how much unrealized potential Brennan left behind.
The first discarded possibility was a major romantic triangle involving Brennan, Anna Devane, and Carly Spencer. McKenna said that when he was placed on contract, he believed the show was clearly preparing a Jack-and-Anna romance that would complicate Brennan’s connection with Carly. Instead, the storyline changed direction, with Carly and Valentin receiving the attention while Jack was pushed aside.
That abandoned triangle could have transformed several relationships at once. Anna and Brennan shared their dangerous WSB history, while Carly represented the emotional life Jack was attempting to build outside the agency. Valentin’s involvement could have turned the triangle into a larger battle over loyalty, espionage, and betrayal. Rather than existing mainly in Carly’s orbit, Brennan might have become the center of an umbrella story involving four major characters.
The second lost storyline concerned Brennan’s battle with Ross Cullum. McKenna expected Jack to awaken from his coma, return to the action, and help defeat the man threatening Port Charles. That would have given Brennan a satisfying comeback and reinforced his reputation as an experienced intelligence chief. Instead, the climax changed after John Oliver Z became involved, leaving Jack sidelined during what should have been one of his defining confrontations.
This missed opportunity makes Brennan’s eventual death feel even weaker. GH repeatedly presented him as a formidable WSB operative, yet he survived elaborate threats only to die after being drugged and somehow reaching the Metro Court pool. Viewers are now questioning whether someone else pushed him into the water. The disabled security system and the search of his hotel room provide enough unanswered evidence to suggest that the full truth may still be hidden.
The third—and most painful—abandoned possibility was Brennan’s developing relationship with Nina Reeves. McKenna praised his chemistry with Cynthia Watros and jokingly called “Brennina” the greatest GH love story never told. Many viewers had already noticed the spark. Their scenes gave Nina a playful, unpredictable romantic partner and allowed Brennan to display humor and vulnerability beyond his relationship with Carly.
Fan reaction shows why this particular loss matters. Viewers began asking GH to preserve Brennan as soon as reports of McKenna’s departure surfaced in August. Some had initially resisted the recast after Charles Mesure left, but McKenna gradually won them over with a darker, more emotionally grounded version of Jack. His scenes with Nina appeared to be the breakthrough that finally separated his Brennan from the original portrayal.
Instead of exploring that chemistry, GH eliminated Brennan just as the pairing gained momentum. Nina has now lost a potential romance, the WSB has lost its Port Charles leader, and the murder mystery risks becoming another vehicle for Drew’s schemes. Fans are especially concerned that Charlotte or Danny could be blamed because Charlotte’s bracelet remained attached to Brennan’s body after the teenagers fled the pool.
McKenna has his own preferred suspect. He joked that he hopes Willow killed Brennan because it is time for her to become a full-fledged murderer. His remark was not a spoiler, but it immediately strengthened an existing fan theory. Willow was near the Metro Court around the relevant time, had a reason to fear Brennan, and may have had an opportunity to confront him before seeking out Britt.
However, Willow is only one possibility. Brennan may have collapsed because of Ava’s drug, been pushed by an unseen attacker, or discovered something dangerous before he died. Whoever searched his room and disabled the hotel’s security could hold the real answer. A carefully constructed investigation might still produce the “Who killed Brennan?” story McKenna hopes will deliver months of compelling television.
Nothing can change the fact that GH discarded three potentially explosive directions for Jack Brennan. A triangle with Anna and Carly, a heroic showdown with Cullum, and a genuine romance with Nina could each have deepened the character. Killing him in a pool was not merely a shocking exit—it may have destroyed one of the show’s richest untapped futures.
