Lia was never operating in isolation. The investigation already established that Garland lab technician Grayson had access to plasma and was connected to the illegal operation. When pressure closed in, Grayson identified Lia as his contact inside the hospital. That revelation exposed corruption reaching from the laboratory all the way to Garland’s leadership. But it also created a question that has never been satisfactorily answered: were two people really enough to keep an operation this large hidden?
That question becomes even more important because Lia herself was not the person at the top. The investigation was still trying to reach The Impaler, the figure above the lower levels of the plasma network. The biggest clue could be Lia’s final conversation with Smitty. He spoke with her about the plasma operation shortly before her death, and that meeting later became important enough for Jacob to question him about it. What if the significance of Lia’s final words was not obvious at the time? A name, a hospital procedure, an access point or even a seemingly meaningless warning could suddenly look completely different once Garland begins examining what happened under Lia’s leadership.
Grayson’s reaction after Lia’s death makes that possibility even darker. He feared that someone was cleaning up loose ends. That fear matters because Grayson understood how the plasma operation worked from the inside. At the time, Ashley appeared to be someone who could become collateral damage because of her connection to Grayson. But after everything that followed, that moment deserves another look. Ashley may have been closer to the truth than she ever realized.

It could simply be something Lia said, authorized or left unfinished before she died — something that no longer matches what Garland’s records reveal. One inconsistency would be enough to prove that activity continued beyond Lia.
And if that happens, Garland has a much bigger problem than a disgraced former Chief of Staff.
