Smitty had every reason to keep digging into Lia before she died. As Garland’s former chief of staff and someone connected to the Red Market operation, Lia potentially knew far more about The Impaler’s network than she had revealed. Smitty believed another conversation with her could finally crack something open. Then he visited her — and Lia was dead shortly afterward.
That timing immediately changed everything. What initially appeared to be an overdose became part of a much larger investigation, with Jacob refusing to simply accept the easiest explanation. Smitty himself suspected The Impaler could be involved. If Lia knew enough to threaten the organization, silencing her would make sense. But the more important question now is whether killing Lia was only half of the plan.
The September 14 episode quietly dropped another clue. Jacob asked Darlene to check whether anyone at the prison called 911 when Lia died. The answer was no. Darlene correctly pointed out that the prison had its own emergency staff, meaning the absence of a 911 call does not prove wrongdoing. And Heather would achieve something much more useful than simply removing him.
She would make everyone stop believing him.
There may also be one final twist hiding inside Lia’s last conversation with Smitty. Her behavior suggested she was interested in how much he knew. That could mean she was gathering intelligence for The Impaler. But there is another possibility: Lia realized the walls were closing in and understood she might not survive long enough to expose everything herself.
If Lia left behind one final clue — a number, a name, a visitor record, a medical connection, or evidence pointing toward someone inside the prison — Smitty’s apparent downfall could become the very thing that ultimately exposes Heather’s network.
That would give this storyline its strongest possible payoff.
Lia was silenced. Smitty was positioned to take the fall. Jacob followed the wrong trail because someone wanted him to. Martin’s family was dragged into the explosion.
Then one overlooked piece of evidence turns the entire investigation around.
Because the biggest question may no longer be who wanted Lia dead?
It may be:
