SPOILER ALERT: Beyond the Gates just dropped one of the most dangerous pieces of evidence yet in Lia’s death investigation, but the photograph putting Smitty under pressure may be pointing everyone toward the wrong question. The real mystery is not simply what Max handed Smitty. It is who knew where Smitty was going afterward — and whether someone used that knowledge to build a devastating trail straight back to him.
Jacob’s latest evidence creates an ugly problem for Smitty. Footage places Smitty with Max shortly before his contact with Lia, and Max can be seen handing him a purple pouch. Investigators have also connected a similar-looking pouch to Lia’s cell after her death. On the surface, the sequence looks terrible: Max gives something to Smitty, Smitty later visits Lia, and something resembling that object turns up where Lia died.
But there is a crucial piece missing from that sequence.
The photograph can establish that Max handed Smitty something. It does not, by itself, establish that Smitty carried that same object into Lia’s cell or gave it to her. That missing step is where the entire investigation could change. If Smitty is being maneuvered into looking responsible, whoever constructed the trap would need more than access to a purple pouch. They would need knowledge of Smitty’s movements.
That makes the timing of Smitty’s visits to Lia far more important than the pouch itself.
Smitty did not simply have an abstract connection to Lia. He went back to see her, hoping the pressure of incarceration might finally convince her to reveal more. That decision created an opportunity nobody may have recognized at the time. If another person knew Smitty planned to visit Lia after meeting Max, his legitimate investigation could be transformed into a suspicious timeline without inventing every piece of evidence from scratch.
That raises the question Jacob’s photograph cannot answer: Who knew Smitty would be there?
Heather immediately becomes impossible to ignore, although the show has not confirmed that she planted the pouch or engineered the evidence against Smitty. Her recent behavior nevertheless makes the timing worth watching closely. Joey had already warned Heather to stay away from Smitty and his family. Yet Heather eventually did the opposite and deliberately approached Smitty herself.
That encounter becomes much more interesting when placed beside the investigation.
Heather introduced herself through her connection to Joey while simultaneously distancing herself from him, making a point of suggesting that she was not like her brother. Smitty does not possess the same information about Heather that Joey does. That information gap could become critical if Smitty is trying to understand why evidence connected to Lia suddenly appears to lead directly toward him.
And Joey may matter for another reason.
Joey knows Heather in a way Smitty does not. Smitty, meanwhile, knows something Joey and perhaps even Jacob do not fully understand: exactly what Max handed him, why Max gave it to him, and what happened to that object afterward. Those are two separate halves of the same mystery sitting with two different men.
If Joey and Smitty ever compare what they know, the investigation could shift dramatically.
Max may therefore be the character everyone should be watching most closely. Heather is the obvious suspect for viewers looking for manipulation, but Max is the person actually visible at the beginning of the evidence chain. Before anyone can establish how a similar pouch reached Lia, there is a more basic question: Why did Max have it in the first place?
The contents matter too, but BTG has not yet established enough to safely assume what was inside. The stronger clue is the transfer itself. Max had an object. Smitty received it. Lia later had something resembling it near her. Somewhere between those confirmed points sits a missing event.
That missing event could decide everything.
It also explains why Smitty’s panic does not automatically make him look guilty. From his perspective, he may be watching ordinary actions from his own investigation suddenly rearranged into something sinister. Meeting Max becomes suspicious. Visiting Lia becomes suspicious. Returning to Lia becomes suspicious. A pouch he may have had a perfectly legitimate reason to possess suddenly becomes the physical link tying those moments together.
That is how an effective setup would work: not by manufacturing an entirely fictional story, but by weaponizing real events until they tell the wrong story.
Jacob may therefore have found an important photograph without finding the answer.
The biggest BTG mystery is no longer simply whether someone is trying to frame Smitty. The evidence is forcing a much sharper question: Who knew about the Max meeting, knew Smitty would visit Lia afterward, and had the opportunity to turn those two real events into one terrifying narrative?
Because once Smitty figures out who knew his timeline, the purple pouch may stop pointing toward him — and start pointing directly toward the person who needed him to look guilty.
