Patty Williams wants Jack Abbott to believe she is finally walking away. Matt Clark wants everyone to believe he is the man who convinced her to do it. But one chilling line in Patty’s goodbye letter changes the entire meaning of that exit — especially when it is placed beside the private conversation she had with Mr. Kitty before Matt ever agreed to leave Genoa City with her.
Patty told Jack that her “new friend” had convinced her that staying free meant going far away. On the surface, that sounds like Matt’s plan worked. He would leave Phyllis behind, accompany Patty out of town and remove the threat hanging over Jack, Diane and everyone else. Patty even handed over Mr. Kitty, making her departure look surprisingly final.
Except Patty never actually promised Jack that she was finished with him.
The dangerous words were “for now.”
Patty would leave Jack alone for now. That is very different from surrendering her obsession. In the same goodbye message, she was still imagining Jack away from Diane and somewhere private where they could rediscover what Patty continues to see as their love. Her destination may have changed, but nothing in that letter proves her ultimate objective did.
And Mr. Kitty knows the difference.
Only days earlier, Patty sat alone with Mr. Kitty and revealed a version of her thinking that Matt never heard. She considered how useful Matt could become if she could separate him from Phyllis. Once Matt was away from Phyllis’s influence, Patty believed she could bring him under her control and use him to handle the “dirty work” while she continued presenting herself as someone capable of redemption.
That detail changes Matt’s goodbye completely.
Matt believes he is sacrificing himself to protect Genoa City. His letter to Phyllis makes that clear. He leaves the woman who had begun seeing something better in him, agrees to travel with Patty and even tells Phyllis not to come looking for him. From Matt’s perspective, he is putting himself between Patty and everyone she could hurt.
But look at the same decision from Patty’s perspective.
Patty wanted Matt separated from Phyllis.
Matt separated himself from Phyllis.
Patty wanted Matt alone where she could influence him.
Matt volunteered to leave town alone with Patty.
Patty needed Phyllis removed from the equation.
Matt specifically told Phyllis not to follow.
Matt may believe he just won the game. In reality, he may have completed the first step of Patty’s plan for her.
That is what makes Mr. Kitty’s arrival at the Abbott mansion so unsettling. Security checked Patty’s package for listening devices, dangerous chemicals and explosives. Nothing obvious was found. The frightening clue may not be hidden inside Mr. Kitty at all.
Mr. Kitty was there when Patty said what she wanted to do with Matt.
Symbolically, Patty has handed Jack the only “witness” to the conversation Matt desperately needed to hear.
There is also a recent precedent for Patty wanting someone else to handle the ugly part of her obsession. Her scheme involving Dr. Laurence Markham put another person between Patty and Diane while Diane was held captive. Patty did not need to perform every part of the operation herself. She needed someone useful enough to help create the conditions she wanted around Jack.
That makes the phrase “dirty work” impossible to ignore now.
Patty’s goals surrounding Jack and Diane have hardly been mysterious. She wants Diane out of Jack’s life. She has fantasized about getting Jack isolated somewhere private, where reality can eventually be replaced by Patty’s version of their relationship. What remains unknown is exactly where Matt fits into that objective.
There is no proof yet that Matt will willingly hurt Diane, abduct Jack or knowingly participate in Patty’s next move. Matt clearly believes he is controlling the situation, not joining Patty’s scheme.
That may be precisely why he is useful.
Patty already questioned whether Matt was deceiving her. She already considered whether he could be manipulated. And while Matt was constructing his plan to get Patty away from Genoa City, Patty was privately constructing a plan in which Matt himself became a tool.
Now they are leaving together.
That makes Patty’s goodbye letter look less like an ending and more like camouflage. “For now” gives her room to disappear without giving up Jack. Mr. Kitty’s departure gives the moment the appearance of closure. And Matt’s decision conveniently gives Patty exactly what she previously said she needed: distance between Matt and Phyllis.
Matt thinks he is escorting Patty out of Genoa City.
The terrifying possibility is that Patty is actually escorting Matt into her plan.
