SONNY’S BRUTAL FRAME-UP PUTS MAURICE BENARD’S RETIREMENT CONFESSION BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT — IS GH QUIETLY BUILDING HIS EXIT?

Sonny Corinthos may be fighting to prove he was framed, but something much bigger is suddenly hanging over his future on General Hospital. Maurice Benard’s contract is moving toward its 2027 expiration window, the actor has openly discussed retirement before, and now GH has placed Sonny inside one of his most dangerous storylines in years. Put those pieces together, and one uncomfortable question becomes impossible to ignore: Is this simply Sonny’s latest crisis, or is GH quietly laying the groundwork for the beginning of his end?

The timing is what makes the situation so explosive. Benard revealed in an August 2026 interview that his current GH contract runs until approximately February or March 2027. That does not mean he is leaving when the deal expires, and there has been no confirmed announcement that Sonny is being written out. But with that contract deadline getting closer, every major change surrounding Sonny suddenly carries more weight than it normally would.

Then there is Benard’s own history of talking about retirement. He has never announced that he is ready to walk away from General Hospital, and his more recent comments have actually indicated that he remains happy on the show. Still, Benard has openly discussed the idea of eventually retiring and has even talked about what kind of ending he could envision for Sonny when that day finally arrives.

That confession feels very different while watching what GH is doing to Sonny right now.

This is no ordinary mob war. Sonny has already stepped away from the criminal empire that defined him for decades. Now he is trapped inside a brutal frame-up that works precisely because everyone knows the man he used to be. The evidence does not have to make Sonny guilty beyond every doubt. It only has to look enough like something Sonny Corinthos would do.

That may be the cruelest part of the entire setup. Sonny can insist that he did not order the Pentonville attack, but his reputation has already done half the work for whoever wants him destroyed. Years of violence, threats and mob justice have created a version of Sonny that Port Charles is prepared to believe in even when he insists that version of himself is gone.

And the consequences are becoming deeply personal.

Dante’s reaction has transformed the frame-up from a criminal mystery into a family crisis. Sonny is no longer simply trying to stay ahead of investigators. He is watching people close to him question whether he is telling the truth. Gio and Justine have also been pulled into that uncertainty, leaving Sonny in the brutal position of having to defend himself to people whose trust matters far more than any courtroom verdict.

That is exactly why Benard’s contract situation now becomes impossible to separate from the storyline.

If GH wanted to reinvent Sonny after more than three decades, this would be one powerful way to do it. Destroy the mob identity. Force him to confront the reputation he created. Make his family question him. Then clear his name and allow Sonny Corinthos to emerge as a completely different man.

But there is another possibility that is far more unsettling.

What if the frame-up is designed to bring Sonny’s story full circle before an eventual departure?

Benard once described a hypothetical ending for Sonny that was remarkably dark, involving devastating consequences connected to one of Sonny’s children and a final moment that would leave viewers with little doubt about what happened. It was not a spoiler or an announcement of GH’s plans. It was simply the actor imagining how Sonny’s story could someday end.

Still, hearing that old confession while Sonny’s contract clock moves toward 2027 makes the current storyline impossible to watch quite the same way.

There is also an important reason not to sound the alarm just yet. Benard has recently indicated that he is not eager to retire and has spoken enthusiastically about upcoming material for Sonny. He has suggested that Sonny can remain powerful without remaining a mob boss, opening the door to an entirely new chapter rather than an ending.

That possibility could completely flip the current storyline.

Maybe GH is not destroying Sonny Corinthos. Maybe it is destroying the version of Sonny that has existed for decades.

The frame-up could become the ultimate test. Sonny finally walks away from the mob, only to discover that walking away does not erase everything he did while he was inside it. To earn a genuine new beginning, he may first have to survive being condemned for the very kind of crime everyone assumes the old Sonny would commit.

But until Maurice Benard’s future beyond his current contract becomes clearer, the timing will continue to raise questions.

A contract approaching its expiration window. An actor who has publicly contemplated retirement. A legendary character abandoning the life that defined him. A devastating frame-up turning his own reputation against him. And a family beginning to wonder whether they ever really knew him at all.

Any one of those developments could simply be another GH storyline.

All of them happening together makes Sonny’s next chapter much harder to dismiss.

The biggest mystery may no longer be only who framed Sonny.

It may be what General Hospital is preparing to do with him once the truth finally comes out.
