Jason Morgan walking away from Sonny Corinthos could create a much bigger disaster than anyone in Port Charles expects. For years, Jason has been the man Sonny could count on when everything went wrong. Now that Jason has stepped away, that protection is suddenly gone — and Drew may see the opening he has been waiting for. But if Drew thinks Jason’s departure leaves Sonny defenseless, he could be making a massive mistake. The person who eventually fills that dangerous empty space may be Sonny’s own son, Dante Falconeri.
That possibility becomes especially explosive because Jason’s exit needs consequences. If Jason simply returns the moment Sonny gets into trouble, his decision to leave loses much of its impact. A far more dramatic direction would be for Jason to remain firm while Drew recognizes that Sonny has lost his longtime right-hand man. Drew could decide this is his chance to push harder, believing Sonny is finally vulnerable enough to corner.
Drew would not necessarily need to attack Sonny with violence. A legal or political strategy could be much more dangerous. Sidwell’s assets, business interests, government connections or another legal vulnerability could give Drew the weapon he needs. Sonny has been moving toward legitimate opportunities, which means Drew could strike precisely when Sonny is trying to change his life. Without Jason handling problems behind the scenes, Sonny may suddenly find himself fighting a kind of war that his old methods cannot solve.
That is where Dante’s story could take a shocking turn.
Imagine Dante facing a serious crisis at the PCPD at exactly the wrong moment. A controversial decision, a conflict involving Sonny, or questions about police procedure could lead to Dante being suspended or temporarily removed from active duty. Suddenly, the badge that has always represented the dividing line between Dante and Sonny would be gone. Dante would still be a cop at heart, but for the first time in years, he might not have the institution standing between him and his father.
Dante would not have to become a mobster for this twist to work. In fact, the story becomes stronger if he refuses to become one. Dante could initially help Sonny for one simple reason: he realizes Drew is targeting his father while Sonny is attempting to move away from the criminal world. What begins as a son’s attempt to protect his family could slowly turn into something neither Dante nor Sonny expected.
Dante also possesses something Jason never had: years of knowledge about police investigations and procedure. He understands how detectives build cases, where prosecutors look for weaknesses and what kind of evidence can destroy someone in court. Instead of teaching Sonny how to escape the law, Dante could push his father toward using the law against Drew. That would preserve Dante’s moral conflict while still placing him dangerously close to the position Jason once occupied.
And Drew could be responsible for creating his own worst nightmare.
If Drew takes advantage of Jason’s departure and his moves somehow contribute to Dante’s PCPD suspension, he could accidentally remove the very barrier that has kept Sonny’s son away from him. Drew thinks he is weakening Sonny. Instead, he may be pushing Dante closer to his father at the exact moment Sonny desperately needs someone he can trust.
The emotional consequences would be enormous for Sonny. He has spent years knowing Dante rejected his criminal life. Sonny may accept Jason’s decision to leave precisely because he does not want to drag another person back into that darkness. Seeing Dante suddenly standing beside him would therefore be bittersweet rather than triumphant. Sonny gets someone he can trust — but it is the one person he never wanted to inherit Jason’s burden.
Dante would face an equally brutal conflict. Every time he warns Sonny about Drew’s strategy, catches a procedural trap or prevents his father from making a catastrophic mistake, he moves one step deeper into territory he has always rejected. He could insist that he is merely helping his father, yet Port Charles might begin noticing the uncomfortable resemblance.
Jason is gone.
Dante is standing beside Sonny.
And Drew may finally realize that the empty space he planned to exploit was never empty for long.
Nothing currently establishes that Dante will literally become Sonny’s new right-hand man, and the strongest version of this storyline would avoid turning him into a traditional mob lieutenant altogether. But Jason’s departure creates a dramatic vacuum that someone eventually has to confront. If Dante loses his badge while Drew escalates his war against Sonny, that vacuum could pull him closer to his father than ever before.
Drew may think Jason walking away means Sonny has finally lost his greatest protector. Instead, his war could force Dante into the one place Sonny never wanted to see his son standing — right where Jason used to be.
