SPOILER ALERT: The photograph Jacob puts in front of Smitty could look devastating at first glance, but the most important part of that image may not be Smitty at all. It is what Max appears to secretly slip into his hand. Jacob sees a suspicious meeting. Smitty sees an old source. But if one overlooked clue from the Impaler investigation finally connects, that mysterious handoff could point in a completely different direction — straight toward Heather.
The preview for the week of September 14–18 puts Smitty in an uncomfortable position when Jacob confronts him with surveillance footage involving Max. Jacob wants confirmation that the man in the image is Smitty, but then comes the question that really matters: what exactly is Max giving him? Naomi immediately recognizes how dangerous that question is and challenges Jacob over whether he intends to charge her client.
That reaction makes the photograph look incriminating, but it does not actually prove a crime. Smitty and Max already have a legitimate reason to meet secretly. Max was connected to Smitty’s investigation into the illegal plasma operation, making discreet exchanges between a journalist and his source completely believable. The photograph proves there was a handoff. It does not prove what changed hands.
And that distinction could blow the entire investigation apart.
The bigger clue comes from what Jacob and Smitty had already uncovered while tracing the Impaler network. Their investigation connected intelligence from the San Francisco operation to Washington, D.C. Most importantly, a phone number emerging from that trail eventually rang Heather’s phone. That was not a random coincidence buried in another storyline. It created a direct investigative path toward the woman secretly sitting much closer to the operation than Smitty realized.
Heather also knew Smitty was becoming dangerous.
That changes the meaning of Max’s mysterious handoff. What if Max was not giving Smitty money, contraband, or anything connected to Lia’s death? What if he was quietly passing him a piece of the Impaler investigation — a phone record, contact information, transaction data, a storage device, or another record that Smitty had not yet understood?
Suddenly Jacob may be looking at the right photograph and reaching the wrong conclusion.
There is an even darker possibility. Lia had been caught inside the Garland plasma nightmare before becoming someone who could potentially expose what was happening. Her death removed a dangerous source of information from the board. If Lia discovered something connecting the plasma operation to the people controlling it from above, that information would have been incredibly valuable — and incredibly dangerous.
Max could have become the bridge that kept that evidence alive.
Imagine the chain: Lia discovers something she was never supposed to see. That information moves outside the organization before she dies. Max eventually gets access to it. Then surveillance captures Max slipping something directly into Smitty’s hand.
The photograph Jacob believes could implicate Smitty might actually capture the moment evidence against Heather changed hands.
That would also explain why Smitty has suddenly become such a serious problem. Heather does not necessarily need to fabricate an entire case against him. A much smarter move would be to weaponize something that really happened. Max really met Smitty. Max really handed him something. Surveillance really captured it. All Heather needs is for Jacob to assign the wrong meaning to that image.
A genuine photograph can become a perfect frame job when the context disappears.
That possibility makes Heather’s coming confrontation with Smitty even more important. Spoilers indicate Heather will stun Smitty as Jacob’s investigation takes an unexpected turn, followed by Smitty panicking and Martin and Naomi rallying around him. That sequence strongly suggests the pressure surrounding Smitty is about to become much more serious.
But Smitty’s panic does not automatically mean guilt.
It could mean he finally understands what Max placed in his hands.
If the item connects Heather to the Impaler network, Smitty may suddenly realize why Lia became expendable, why his own investigation has become so dangerous, and why someone would benefit from making Jacob suspicious of him before he can put the remaining pieces together.
That leaves one explosive question hanging over the surveillance image: where is the item now?
If Smitty still has it, Heather has a reason to come after him. If it disappeared, someone may already have searched for it. And if Max kept a second copy, Jacob could eventually discover that the photograph he treated as evidence against Smitty was actually documenting the transfer of the evidence he needed all along.
The biggest bombshell may therefore have been sitting in Jacob’s hands from the beginning.
He just may be looking at the wrong man.
