The show never identified that problem, but the timing points toward something much bigger than another threat.
Smitty has already become dangerous to Heather’s operation. His reporting has pushed him deeper into the criminal network surrounding the Impaler, and his investigation of Lia put him dangerously close to someone who once operated inside that world. Heather has every reason to stop him, but simply attacking Smitty would create another obvious trail. Her smarter move would be to make Smitty himself look suspicious.
That possibility changes the meaning of Heather’s September 15 order completely. Instead of ordering someone to physically silence Smitty, Heather could have ordered someone to manipulate the trail surrounding Lia’s death. She would not even need to manufacture an elaborate piece of evidence. Smitty already had a legitimate reason to contact Lia because he believed she knew more about the Impaler than she had revealed.
That innocent connection could become devastating in the wrong hands. Imagine Jacob discovering evidence that Smitty contacted Lia shortly before her death without immediately knowing why. Suddenly, the question would no longer be what Lia knew about the Impaler. It would become why Smitty was dealing with Lia before she died — and what exactly happened between them.
Heather has already shown how effectively she can manipulate the meaning of real information. She does not always need to invent an entirely new story. She can take something that actually happened, remove the context and encourage someone else to reach the conclusion she wants. That makes Smitty’s genuine interest in Lia potentially more useful to Heather than fabricated evidence ever could be.
The timing after September 15 makes the possibility even harder to overlook. The next developments place Jacob’s investigation on an unexpected path while Heather delivers something that stuns Smitty. Then Smitty is left panicking as Martin and Naomi rally around him. She only needs to create enough uncertainty around Smitty’s connection to Lia that Jacob cannot ignore it. Suspicion alone could accomplish what violence cannot.
And that is why the wording of Heather’s September 15 scene matters so much. She did not celebrate destroying an enemy. She wanted a “problem” handled, then calmly received confirmation that it had been done. That sounds less like the end of a scheme than the placement of its first piece.
The biggest question now is what Heather had planted, moved, erased or reframed before that confirmation call arrived.
