Spoiler alert: This article discusses current Beyond the Gates storylines and speculation about Bill’s next move against Hayley.

Hayley Hamilton thinks she has designed the perfect murder. Bill Hamilton dies from an apparent heart failure, his body is cremated before anyone discovers the poison, and she collects his $10 million life insurance policy. However, Bill may not need to expose Hayley immediately. He could destroy her entire plan with one signature—and let her incriminate herself while chasing money she will never receive.
The insurance policy is the foundation of Hayley’s scheme. After Bill suffered a stroke, he purchased a $10 million policy and named Hayley as its sole beneficiary. He believed he was protecting his wife. Hayley saw the policy as the biggest payday of her criminal career.
Hayley and Randy have already decided how to divide the money. Once Bill dies, Hayley expects to receive the full payout before giving Randy his promised $5 million share. Their plan was to administer the final dose of poison in St. Barts, claim Bill’s damaged heart finally failed and arrange a rapid cremation that would prevent an autopsy.
The pair are not satisfied with the insurance money alone. Hayley has discussed liquidating Bill’s other holdings, while Bill previously placed a St. Barts beach house in her name. Her growing greed has even unsettled Randy, who has repeatedly warned his cousin that she is becoming careless.
That tension gives Bill the perfect weapon.
Bill recently caught Hayley and Randy together at Uptown. Seeing them laughing privately does not prove they are plotting murder, but it gives him a reason to revisit every warning his family has delivered. It also gives the famously ruthless attorney a reason to investigate without alerting his wife.
Bill’s smartest move would be to secretly remove Hayley as the beneficiary of his life insurance policy. If he owns the policy and Hayley was not named as an irrevocable beneficiary, he could generally submit a formal change to the insurer. He could replace her with Naomi and Chelsea, a family trust or his estate.
Hayley would not need to know about the change.
That secrecy is what makes the trap so brutal. Hayley could continue poisoning Bill while believing his death would unlock $10 million. Meanwhile, Bill could move other assets into a trust, restrict access to his accounts and create a record of every suspicious attempt Hayley makes to transfer or sell his property.
Bill could make the trap even more irresistible by allowing Hayley to believe he had increased her financial protection. A carefully planted document or conversation about an updated estate plan would encourage her to contact Randy. If investigators were monitoring their communications, Hayley’s own excitement could expose her knowledge of a payout she should not be anticipating.
The most explosive version of the plan would involve Bill faking his death.
Fans have already suggested that Bill should stage one final heart crisis and allow Hayley to believe the poison worked. The moment she thinks he is dead, she would likely call Randy, discuss their shares and begin the insurance claim. Bill could then reappear after recording the conversation that proves their motive.
Even without a fake death, Hayley’s plan has a massive legal weakness. Under laws commonly known as the “slayer rule,” a person responsible for intentionally killing or conspiring to kill someone can be disqualified from receiving that person’s insurance proceeds or property. If Maryland law governs Bill’s fictional policy, Hayley could lose the money even if she remained the named beneficiary.
In other words, Hayley may be risking prison for a payout the law would never allow her to keep.
Randy could become the weak link once he realizes the money is gone. His loyalty to Hayley is already tied to the $5 million she promised him. He has criticized her greed, questioned her decisions and worried that she is becoming sloppy. If Bill secretly revealed that Hayley was no longer the beneficiary, Randy might cooperate to save himself.
Bill could also use Hayley’s greed to turn the cousins against each other. If Hayley believed Randy had negotiated privately with Bill, she might accuse or threaten him. If Randy believed Hayley planned to keep the full payout, he could expose her first. Their partnership would collapse without Bill ever confronting either of them directly.
Naomi would be the logical person to help Bill secure his estate, while Joey could quietly monitor Randy. Chelsea and Dani already understand Hayley’s manipulative behavior, and each could help Bill maintain the illusion that his family remains divided.
This strategy would finally restore the version of Bill that Fairmont Crest once feared. Instead of remaining the brilliant attorney who somehow cannot recognize the criminal in his own home, he would become the fixer again—calmly allowing Hayley to believe she is winning until escape is impossible.
Hayley has spent months calculating the exact dose required to kill Bill. She has planned the location, the cremation and the division of his fortune. But she may have overlooked the simplest danger of all.
Hayley needs Bill’s death to collect $10 million. Bill only needs a pen to make her entire murderous plan worthless.
