SPOILER ALERT: Drew Cain may have made one devastating mistake in his revenge against Nina Reeves, and it wasn’t planting Jack Brennan’s wallet in her car. It was telling Ava Jerome exactly what he did. Now Ava possesses the one secret that could blow apart the evidence against Nina without necessarily exposing everything that happened the night Brennan died.
Drew finally admitted the truth when Ava confronted him. Brennan’s wallet didn’t mysteriously end up underneath Nina’s car seat. Drew deliberately put it there, creating the evidence that Agent Baines later used against Nina. Drew viewed the move as protection for himself and Ava, but his confession suddenly gave Ava something far more dangerous than another secret to keep.
Ava then arrived at the PCPD in time to see the consequences with her own eyes. Nina wasn’t simply being questioned anymore. She was being taken into WSB custody and transferred away, leaving Ava face-to-face with what Drew’s revenge had actually accomplished. That moment puts Ava in an impossible position because she knows Nina is being punished for evidence that was manufactured.
Ava cannot simply walk into the PCPD and announce that Drew planted Brennan’s wallet. Explaining how she knows could invite questions about Brennan, the drug in his drink, Drew’s involvement and everything Ava has been desperate to keep buried. Saving Nina through a full confession could destroy Ava right along with Drew.
But Ava doesn’t need to confess everything.
She only needs to tell the right person where to look.
That person is Ric Lansing. Ric has already challenged the weakness surrounding the evidence against Nina, questioning how the case is being handled while Baines pushes ahead with the WSB transfer. Ric is also the person who now has to explain Nina’s nightmare to Willow. If Ava wants someone capable of pulling at one loose thread without immediately exposing her own role, Ric is standing right in front of the story.
The wallet is that loose thread.
Drew’s plan depends on everyone accepting one simple assumption: because Brennan’s wallet was discovered in Nina’s vehicle, Nina must somehow be connected to Brennan’s disappearance and death. But Ava knows the most important fact investigators don’t know. The wallet’s location tells them nothing about Nina because Drew personally chose where it would be found.
Ava could therefore give Ric something far smaller than a confession. A question about when the wallet appeared. A detail about who had access to Nina’s vehicle. A warning that the evidence didn’t arrive there the way Baines believes. She wouldn’t even have to explain the entire Brennan cover-up if she could push Ric toward independently challenging the wallet’s chain of custody.
And once Ric starts examining that timeline, Drew has a serious problem.
The same wallet Drew selected because it looked like devastating evidence could become the object that exposes the frame job. Every question about where it came from creates another question about who handled it, when it was moved and how it ended up underneath Nina’s seat. Drew needed the wallet to point investigators toward Nina. A closer examination could instead point investigators toward whoever planted it.
That possibility becomes even more explosive because Drew believes his revenge is only beginning. After successfully setting Nina up, he privately made it clear that Willow is next. Drew apparently thinks he has survived phase one and can now move forward with phase two.
He may not realize Ava has already become the biggest weakness in his plan.
Ava heard his confession. She understands his motive. She knows Nina didn’t put Brennan’s wallet in that car. Most importantly, she just watched her friend get hauled away because of it. Drew may believe their shared Brennan secret guarantees Ava’s silence, but that only works if Ava believes silence is her only option.
It isn’t.
Ava has spent years surviving situations where telling the whole truth would destroy her. She doesn’t need to become Nina’s heroic witness overnight. She only needs to manipulate the investigation just enough to put Ric on the correct trail.
That would be the perfect reversal for Drew.
He planted Brennan’s wallet because he wanted one piece of physical evidence to destroy Nina. He trusted Ava with the truth because he believed their mutual exposure would keep her quiet.
But if Ava slips Ric one carefully chosen detail, Drew could discover that the evidence he planted wasn’t his perfect weapon after all.
Brennan’s wallet could become the first piece of evidence that proves someone framed Nina — and Drew may have already told Ava exactly how to bring his entire setup crashing down.
